Post-Cataract Referral Workflow - Tutorial and Guidance for Secondary Care Users

Post-Cataract Referral Workflow

On this help page, you can find a video tutorial and service guide to support with navigating the Post-Cataract Referral pathway.

Video Tutorial

The Post-Cataract Referral pathway in OPERA enables secondary care teams to transfer patients to accredited community provider for their post-operative cataract assessment.

This video covers the following:

  • Before creating a referral, check the Hospital Dashboard for any in-registration messages, rejected referrals, or patients already progressing through the Workflow Tracker. OPERA also checks for existing patient records to help prevent duplicate referrals.
  • Patient demographics are retrieved from the NHS Spine where available, but mandatory information should always be verified before submission to ensure referrals are processed without delay. Supporting clinical documentation, such as discharge summaries and pre-assessment notes, can also be uploaded to provide community providers with the information they need to deliver ongoing care.
  • Once submitted, referrals can be monitored through the Workflow Tracker, allowing hospital teams to view each patient's progress throughout their post-cataract journey.

Please refer to the video tutorial below for a full demonstration of the referral process:

Service Guide

The Post-Cataract guide for Hospital Users provides comprehensive guidance on the process for each step to transfer patients into community care. It can be accessed below and should be used alongside the video tutorial as a reference when using the service:
