PES Cataract Provider Choice Tool - Guide for Surgical Providers
At Primary Eyecare Services (PES), we have developed a Cataract Provider Choice Tool to create one source of information, supporting patients to make informed and unbiased decisions regarding their cataract surgery.
Our ‘ Find a Hospital’ page (Our Cataract Provider Choice Tool) will show practitioners and patients:
- Distance of Hospital or Treatment Centre from inserted postcode
- Average waiting time for first outpatient appointment from referral
- Average waiting time for surgery from referral
- Type of cataract clinic eg. high volume low complexity and all cataract lists with exclusions highlighted
- Posterior Capsular Rupture Complication Rating (From NOD Website)
- Avoidance of Vision Loss Complication Rating (From NOD Website)
- Care Quality Commission Overall Rating (From CQC Website)
- Care Quality Commission Surgery Rating (From CQC Website)
- Date the waiting times were last updated
- A map with visual representation of provider locations
The Provider Choice Tool will be used as part of the PES Enhanced Cataract Referral Service or if commissioned with PES in the area, the Single Point of Access (SPoA) pathway.
Enhanced Cataract Referral Service
The link to our ‘Find a Hospital’ page is embedded into the Enhanced Cataract Referral Service module on OPERA to be used as part of the patient choice discussions during Enhanced Cataract Referral assessments. The link can be opened and used on the practitioners’ electronic device within the Enhanced Cataract Referral module or, the link to the provider choice tool on our website can be shared with the patient via text or email for them to view their options on their mobile.
Single Point of Access (SPoA)
Where Primary Eyecare Services are commissioned to provide SPoA, a link to the Cataract Provider Choice Tool will be provided in the patient letter. The patient then has the choice to access the link online to view their provider options or call Primary Eyecare Services Hub to discuss their options. Once the patient has made an informed decision regarding their cataract surgery, they can either make their booking on the NHS e-Referral Service using their password and reference number stated on their letter. Alternatively, they can book their appointment on the phone via our Primary Eyecare Services Hub.
Practitioner and Patient Facing Tool
Firstly, to view providers, insert your postcode and select required type of clinic. The relevant closest providers to the inserted postcode will show first with the furthest being last. There is a listed view of the providers as well as map view.

Provider Waiting Times
To provide up to date waiting times on the Cataract Provider Choice Tool, waiting times need to be inputted by the providers. To keep the information as up to date and accurate as possible, we recommend for these to be updated at least monthly. The date of the most recent update of waiting times will show on the tool ‘last updated date’.
When first logging in to user accounts to input waiting times, all users will be asked to agree to our terms and conditions:
Calculating Waiting Time Rules
All waiting times data submitted should align to data reported via the most recent national RTT data submission periods.
Appointment Weeks: Average waiting time for first face to face outpatient appointment from referral. This is defined at the 92 percentile of waiting time in weeks for the first assessment appointment from date of referral.
Surgery Weeks: Average waiting time for surgery from referral. This is defined as the 92 percentile of waiting time in weeks for surgery from the date of referral. NOTE: Where waiting time is in between full week periods the number should be rounded up or down in line with national guidance: as per the following: X weeks+1,2,3 days = round down / X weeks +4,5,6 days round up.
